I didn't try to compare with Linux, but since you ask me this specific question, I can tell you that my webcam, GeForce card and digital camera all work with off-the-shelf Linux. And they did that the day I got Windows 2000.

The digital camera only supports serial, unless you install a program for USB that you have to download first.

The HP OfficeJet T65 does not include Linux software, and is hasn't been connected to any PC until recently where I attached it to my Win2K PC. I know that Linux can print to it, but I'm also sure that the lack of software means that it works much better with Windows 2000.

Frankly, I was surprised how well Linux handled all those devices I had. I expected that Linux would need a driver for my GeForce card, but no, it was included, autodetected etc. Even with 3D acceleration.

Conclusion:

When Windows 2000 came on the market, Linux handled my hardware MUCH better than Windows 2000. Today, Windows 2000 would take longer to install than Linux, but works better with the hardware after installation.

TCO, speed and stability for the needed functionality is much better with Linux, but Windows 2000 today provides extra functionality at higher costs.

Your interpretation of the original post is different from mine, but when I re-read the post, your interpretation seems pretty likely. According to MSFT, Windows 2000 should be installed from scratch to provide the best result. Having upgraded a Win98 with weird results, I can only agree.
