At the same time, shouldn't we specify what we mean by "left"? "Left" is by no means the same as "liberal."

For example, Anthony Lewis (whom nobody would think of characterizing as a conservative) has said that Clinton had a worse civil liberties record than any other President in the last 60 years.

Left-wingers, especially of the Communist variety, often have very little regard for civil liberties. LIBERALS, however, are expected to give them top priority.

Where civil liberties are concerned, Clinton was certainly no liberal.

Incidentally, it was quite a sight to see the ACLU and Republicans like Tom DeLay lining up on the same side in opposition to the Clinton FBI wire-tapping bill.
