SUN's most important purchase this year may have happened in December when they bought Highground- This acquisition puts them in the middle of the storage wars and this acquisition was considered by a speaker from Data Quest at SSB storage conference in December as the most significant shift in storage for this coming year- SUN may finally become a serious competitor to EMC in the storage Networking in a big way-
The growth rates for SANs are just in their infancy(aproximately 2-3 Billion in 2000 and projected to be 23 billion by 2003-2004/and the numbers keep getting revised upwards) and SUN banking alot in succeeding in this space- They succeed here and the stock price will follow big time -If they fail here it will be tough to maintain the growth rates- SUN Servers biz will do it's thing and dominate the market-Storage is where they need to succeed to continue to get back to nice upside surprises as this biz will pass servers in revenues and certainly in ramp the next few years-
SUN will offer a completely different looking SANs then EMC- Server Centric versus SANs out of the box. This is where SUN is betting the farm and it's been a slow painstaking process but it looks like it may be here sooner then later -finally!!!!! Finally had a chance to buy SUN after years of watching it,in the last few weeks.
