Nortel Networks Grows Leadership in Bringing
High-Performance Internet to China

Delivering 320 Gigabit Bandwidth Power to Henan Province Optical
Backbone

BEIJING - Henan Telecom has selected Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT]
to supply a 10-gigabit per second, 2,000 kilometer backbone network
spanning 20 points of presence (POPs) across the province, further
strengthening Nortel Networks growing leadership position in delivering the
high-performance Internet to China.

Planned for operation by April 2001, the new Henan Telecom network will
bring the power and bandwidth of the Optical Internet to customers in Henan
province through high-quality voice, data and leased bandwidth services. It
will also serve as part of China Telecom's national high-capacity broadband
network.

Henan Telecom will deploy Nortel Networks OPTera* Connect DX optical
switch, which brings a new class of Optical Internet to service providers and
carriers. OPTera Connect DX can increase network capacity, provide flexible
services, improve connection and network management capabilities, and
enhance network reliability.

Nortel Networks OPTera Connect DX enables quick, seamless delivery of
global transport and end-to-end services solutions. OPTera Connect DX
supports DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) applications
capable of deploying up to 320 gigabits of bandwidth over a single,
bi-directional optical fiber.

"This Henan Telecom contract further reinforces Nortel Networks leadership
position in building high-capacity optical networks in China," said Robert
Mao, president, Nortel Networks China. "At present, we are building the
majority of China's 10 gigabits-per-second networks, empowering our
customers with unprecedented levels of scalability and capacity, as well as
services and management solutions designed to create new revenue
opportunities and generate new heights of subscriber satisfaction."

To date, Nortel Networks optical contract wins in China include the
320-gigabit Nanjing-Wuhan network and a number of other significant
projects in Zhejiang, Chongqing, Changchun, Dandong, Xiamen and
Guangdong. In December 2000, Nortel Networks OPTera Long Haul 1600
Optical Line System was selected by China Netcom Corporation (CNC) for a
high-speed, 70-kilometer, international optical gateway linking the
Shenzhen-Hong Kong sector of CNC's 17-city network.

Nortel Networks ranks number one in long haul DWDM, metropolitan DWDM
and SONET/SDH market share, according to a recent report by the Dell'Oro
Group, an industry research firm. The report also shows that Nortel Networks
has expanded its Optical Internet leadership position, gaining 43.2 percent of
the overall optical transport market. Nortel Networks optical backbones carry
75 percent of North America's Internet traffic and 50 percent of Europe's,
according to RHK Kent and the Yankee Group.

Nortel Networks is a global Internet and communications leader with
capabilities spanning Optical, Wireless, Local Internet and eBusiness. The
Company had 2000 U.S. GAAP revenues of US$30.3 billion and serves
carrier, service provider and enterprise customers globally. Today, Nortel
Networks is creating a high-performance Internet that is more reliable and
faster than ever before. It is redefining the economics and quality of
networking and the Internet, promising a new era of collaboration,
communications and commerce. Visit us at www.nortelnetworks.com.

Kenneth, if the article suggests investors are willing to pay 50 pe for NT, then that would only mean that NT should be trading higher, since it is only closer to 40 pe now.
