As for HD I disagree, when things get bad people go to the cheapist source ie WMT. When WMT is hit then its time to panic.

The consumer spending component of GDP has grown way beyond the long term average of 2/3 GDP. This consumption binge has been fueled by the stock market wealth effect, credit excesses, and the dramatic decline in the savings rate. mike

I agree that HD provides an excellent proxy for Joe Sixer's spending attitudes. It's also refreshijng to see some honesty in reporting.
