Delivering Applications to end-users

Ophir Holder
Mobilitec

Mobilitec provide Wireless ASP middleware solutions delivering services to Java capable mobile terminals.

Mobilitec’s vision for devices in the future is that the terminal becomes the ultimate PDA with a range of powerful and compelling applications. In order to deliver this it needs an open and standard environment and the J2ME (including KVM, CDC and CLDC) solution can offer this. This can be supported on a range of operating systems (e.g. Symbian, Palm etc.)

LG (in Korea) have already delivered a J2ME compliant handset for CMDA and are currently working on delivering similar GSM devices. The device (phone) can download java applications over the air and is already available commercially in Korea today. Other Java capable devices as expected shortly from Motorola and RIM (Research in Motion - The Blackberry device).

A range of services can be delivered with J2ME / MExE but there are some barriers:

· Devices have resource limitations which means that applications need to be carefully managed.

· Devices need to be personalised - appropriate applications for user and devices.

· The business model is still undecided - do you charge per download, usage etc.?

· Who will manage the applications on the mobile devices? Today on PC's, software will be loaded by Administrators or sometimes users - management / downloading of mobile applications may be major barrier for services on the new generation of devices as it is not yet clear who will manage this process.

Mobilitec believe that an ASP model is the key to service provisioning, managing devices / applications and loading apps on an as-needed basis. This central entity can also provide billing and support for the services.

There are many ASP models:

· Wireless Carriers

· WASPs (Wireless Application Service Providers) who are not carriers (e.g. AvantGo, WorldZAP)

· Enterprise and Corporations - delivering solutions to their own employees and users.

It is likely that this distribution network will be extended in the future as new channels emerge, but it is clear that there is a major opportunity to deliver services in this way.

The companies that are proactive in this area (known as the Java based pioneers) include:

· LG TeleCom - who have launched the first commercial service in the world using the i-book J2ME phone. This service allows games and other applications to be downloaded to the handset and these are charged on a per download basis. Mobilitec are providing the platform for this.

· NTT DoCoMo - who will be offering these services on I-mode shortly.

· Motorola - who have already committed to delivering java enabled Mobile devices in 2001. <<
