Nokia scored yet another contract to develop mobile networks in China: Today the world’s No. 1 handset maker says it will help Shanxi Mobile Communications Corp. expand its GSM 900 network in northern China. The companies have partnered on various projects since 1997, but did not disclose the value of this latest contract. On the whole, Nokia has invested more than $1 billion on projects in China and has more than 5,000 employees there.

This latest contract follows several others, including a $100 million deal in September to expand various GSM networks for China Unicom - one week after U.S. Congress approved more open trade relations with the country.

U.S. wireless companies waited anxiously for years to gain access to China’s strong but tightly regulated mobile scene. The country with 1.2 billion people surpassed Japan as Asia’s largest mobile market in the first quarter of 2000, at the time boasting 51.7 million subscribers. <<
