If you spent any time on Friday watching the continued assault on John Ashcroft before the Senate, you might have seen a guy named Michael Barnes testifying against the guaranteed-to-be-confirmed attorney general. Well, let me tell you a little bit about Michael Barnes - who's a bigwig at Handgun Control Inc. - and who he is. I first became familiar with Michael Barnes in the mid- to late eighties. Back then, we had this huge battle raging in this country over los contras de Nicaragua, and whether or not we as a nation should fund these pro-democracy / anti-communist freedom fighters. On the side of democracy were conservatives and Republicans led by Ronald Reagan. On the side of cutting off the contras and supporting their communist dictatorship were a number of liberal Democrats in the House of Representatives. These liberal Democrats repeatedly sided with the Soviet puppet and dictator of Nicaragua, the Sandanista leader Daniel Ortega. Many Democrats in Congress went so far in their support of communism as to sign what has now become known as the "Dear Comandante Letter." This was a letter written by Speaker of the House Jim Wright, and signed by many others. Congressbeings Patsy Schroeder, Jim Jones and one Michael Barnes - at the time a congressman from Maryland signed the letter. You see, at the time, Barnes was a leader in the anti-freedom fighter movement in Nicaragua. Put a better and more accurate way, Barnes was a pro-communist Sandanista supporter in Nicaragua. The "Dear Comandante Letter" basically begged Ortega to take it easy, to go slow, and just be patient until the Democratic Congress could do something about Reagan. At the time, they knew 1988 was coming up, and thought that if the Sandanistas could just cool their heels and not embarrass the Democrats by flying off to Moscow to get more money from the Russians every time they won a vote in the Congress, everything would work out fine. That would actually happen, by the way. Daniel Ortega would win a vote in Congress thanks to Democrats voting for him, and then the dictator would fly off to Russia and come back with another $500 billion or whatever in Soviet aid. That, of course, embarrassed Democrats, so they penned this letter. Of course, Reagan was not defeated, and because of the support he and the Republicans gave the contras, free elections were held in Nicaragua. The left was sure Oretga would win, because they loved and supported communism so much - but guess what happened? Ortega lost the election, proving that Reagan was right to support freedom for the Nicaraguan people over strident liberal objections. So this is where Michael Barnes of Handgun Control, Incorporated is coming from. He was just huge in the whole area of trying to prop up and cultivate and give comfort to a brutal Soviet puppet regime in Central America - a regime the people of Nicaragua voted out of office as soon as they had the chance. Remember that when you see this guy up there testifying against John Ashcroft, and ask yourself what credibility he could possible have. rushlimbaugh.com
