Streaming Media Continues To Attract VC Dollars
by Paul Shread
January 19, 2001

Streaming media may sound like yesterday's news, but at least one analyst thinks the technology still has a lot of room to grow. And venture capitalists appear to agree.

Research firm Daedalus Venture Group reported eight venture capital deals in the streaming media space totaling more than $100 million in the fourth quarter, no small sum for a technology that some might associate more with the height of the dot-com boom.

"It is a technology that still has quite a ways to go," said DVG's Adam Needles. "When was the last time you saw a Webcast that was worth its beans? Current platforms deliver inconsistent feeds with choppiness of images and sounds and that have difficulties in high-availability environments. QoS, server performance, etc. are still sort
of hanging out there. What we're seeing is a new generation of folks that are addressing these issues and taking streaming media to the next level.

So this new generation of ventures are focused on serious enhancements of streaming media architectures, particularly for complicated multi-path to multi-point transmissions."

Half of the start-ups - ActiveSky, Anystream, InternetClass
Communications and Wecomm - focus on the wireless Internet, the fastest-growing sector for Internet venture capital deals in the fourth quarter. "These firms are trying to address streaming over wireless links,
particularly low-bandwidth links, as in the case of InternetClass Communications," Needles said.

Other streaming media deals in the fourth quarter include AppStream, Vividon, Wecomm and Widevine. Needles called the continued growth in streaming media "a trend where,
quite frankly, I think others are missing out, mostly because folks think it is kind of old news, which is entirely not the case."

With much progress still to be made and the wireless Web still in its infancy, streaming media technology could be a growth area for some time to come.
