Thanks Gottfried. I have been extremely happy with my Zoom Dualmode 56k modem for a couple of years but in the past few months have had lots of problems keeping my dialup configured and a check with Zoom site now indicates my modem isn't compatible with W9x, tho I'm sure it was when I bought it and it has worked well in past. Figuring out what went south is a mystery. I tired to reload the utilities and drivers from the floppy and get a display that looks like code, nothing I can click on to install. Tried the CD rom that came with modem and got fatal error, oops, so that didn't work. I have to guess that the upgrade to W98 from 95 wiped out compatibility and W98 has kept me running with generic drivers. This would be okay except the dialup config keeps losing the modem every time I reboot so then I have to reinstall modem. Easy way out for this nongeek is buy a new modem that is definitely compatible with both W98 and W2k. I'll miss my Zoom tho, unless I can find one that fits. The W2k site gives a list of Zooms that have W2k drivers available on a CDrom that comes with the new computer but when I put the CDrom in and look for modem drivers, there isn't much of anything there. So downloading is an option except that I'll have to do it on this machine since the 4100 can't download unless it's online! Heh. Catch 22.

Well, I'll figure out something. I am nothing if not patient.

Attention Mark:

I researched the IDE controllers on the 4100. It is not a cut and dried situation, but here is what I found: There are three IDE controllers listed. The first I am guessing is for the hard drive, it is labelled Ultra Ata. There is no Advanced settings tab for this controller. Under Resources there is a check box which says "Use automatic settings" and this is checked and cannot be unchecked (I tried). Under Primary IDE channel Properties, there is an advanced settings tab. The menu choice selected is Use DMA if available. Current mode: PIO mode. Current mode: not applicable. So this controller may not be connected to anything. On the Secondary IDE Channel there is also an advanced settings tab. Device 0 shows transfer mode: DMA if available. current mode: Ultra DMA mode. Device 1 shows transfer mode: DMA if available. Current mode: PIO. I see no place on the latter two IDE channels where I could override the current choices. This machine (the new 4100) has an Ultra 40 gig HD, a floppy drive, a CDrom drive, and a Zip 100 drive. So far that is all I know.

best,

Rick

Ps. Useful W2K discovery: playing Space Cadet is more fun than Realtick and amazingly cheaper!
