The US has never experienced such a rapid credit expansion for unproductive purposes.

The example from history with which it rhymes is the British Railway boom, which resulted in a hodgepodge collection of railines, often redundant. During the period of speculation, when plans were laid, massive amounts of credit were created which, when called, sucked capital from the rest of the economy and created an excess of track, trains, but no increase in people or goods to ride them. 10 years of deflationary hardship ensued.
