SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Komag, Incorporated (Nasdaq: KMAG - news), a technical leader in the disk drive component industry, today announced that the company has begun volume production of disks capable of storing more than 30 gigabytes (``GB'') per platter. This new generation of 30 GB per platter media builds on key innovations that have advanced the state-of-the-art in commercial disks. The media feature atomically smooth ultra-super-polished substrates, high signal-to-noise ratio proprietary magnetic alloy films, and excellent mechanical durability due in part to implementation of Komag's advanced carbon overcoat deposition technology.

``The rate of improvement in storage density is going at a breakneck pace. We know that to be successful in the long run we must provide media at the leading edge of market requirements. Our development efforts are focused on working concurrently with customers and other component suppliers from the earliest stages of drive design. We are proud of the role our technical team plays supporting our customers' demanding time-to-market strategies,'' said T.H. Tan, Komag's president and chief executive officer.
