Pravin: Makes me wonder when we will hear them announce that they are working on a 64-bit Willamette.

You don't think they already are?

There were reports around the time of the K7 intro (maybe somewhat later) that Intel had started an entirely new x86 project. Willie with changes should be extremely competitive for a very long time, though. (but, then, if the team was assembled at that point, first silicon might well still be a several years off).

"The above article also mentions that AMD would be on the right track if Sledgehammer is indeed CMP with SMT."

The article makes no mention of SMT for Sledgehammer. And indeed, it is highly unlikely that Sledgehammer will be SMT capable. At best, Sledgehammer may be CMT (Coarse-grained Multi Threaded) and CMP.

I suspect however, that AMD is working on making K9 SMT capable. I would look for K9 in 2004.
