I didn't know that - how said. They are a small portion of the prison population but that doesn't really explain it.

There are a lot of statistics here. They seem to be different than the particular day that was quoted in that show. Perhaps it was the day--alongside other factors.

There has certainly been a huge increase in prisoners (and women prisoners) over the last decade--many of them for drug related crimes--many of them African American. The Federal Government needs to take a look at current policy...

EDIT: my reference to "last decade" is accurate, but I have just noticed that this link appears to supply statistics up to 1994. Huge increase in the last 20 years.
