If you read the physiological/metabolic data on link there is a permanent physical basis for this operation (now being done in Mexico City and elsewhere by licensed neurosurgeons). She had already used those other substances when young so that was not a specific interest of hers. She probably expected the increased blood flow to improve her life and intelligence. It's not as baseless as you might think. It still kinda creeped me out even if it is one of the first recorded (10,000 BCA) and longest practiced operations we've got in the anthropological record.
