I worked in peoples' homes, so it was still the people business, but a lot less intensive. Did it for 10 years, built up a nice little business.

Strictly speaking, the job as a counselor wasn't public service because the facility I worked at was privately owned. There aren't many wild stories about being a counselor, but while I was taking classes I worked as a nurses' aide in the detox. That wasn't too wild either, unless you count holding people's heads while they were having seizures. I had to disarm a guy once.

It was for the most part a fun, rewarding experience. It was certainly interesting. Met many colorful characters. When drunks get past detox and start getting honest with themselves, they usually turn out to be warm generous people. Many are surprisingly sensitive, which may be one of the reasons they sought solace in the bottle.
