Economic libertarianism is similar to anarchy. Social libertarianism is closer to my personal moral philosophy, but I recognize that all people aren't capable of self-direction without some paternalism. Pure free market libertarianism has as many evils (for many the same reasons) as other utopian philosophies which fail to recognize that a base side exists in human nature and must be addressed.

An absolute free market provides a less than optimum society if not regulated. Things that are allowed because they produce a profit for the next 4 quarters may have improperly accounted costs to society. Enforcing honest society accounting is government's legitimate role. They are the protector of not only those alive now, but those who will come.

This regulatory view is perceived as "liberal". I believe that any such regulation should be monitored and tested. Putting in place measures like Great Society produced bad effects on black society. These errors should have been acknowledged and corrected much earlier. I believe in government funded programs like Children's TV Workshop, Head Start, School Lunches, universal education, and other things that would never make it to market without some sponsorship like orphan drugs.

I don't believe vouchers will improve public schools but rather they will promote an educational caste system. Initially, private schools will be able to draw off the most advantaged students, leaving only the poor and second generation illiterate in public schools. I don't think free market policy should be applied to long term social and environmental goals because there is no feedback mechanism that provides a true accounting (basic control theory).
