Dell Warns Earns to Be Below Forecasts

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - news)
warned on Monday that its fourth-quarter results would fall short of
expectations as a result of the slowdown in the global economy and a
slowdown in demand for computer products and services.

Dell joins a slew of computer companies that have warned about or reported
lower earnings. Apple Computer Inc. (NasdaqNM:AAPL - news), Compaq
Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW - news)
and Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news) have all said that the
December quarter was a disappointment.

Dell said it now expects fourth-quarter earnings of between 18 cents and 19 cents, down from its previous
estimates of 26 cents. Analysts on average had been expecting fourth-quarter earnings of 25 cents a share,
according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

The Austin, Texas-based company said that it expects its fourth-quarter revenues to be up 25 percent to 27
percent on the year to between $8.5 billion and $8.6 billion, down from its previous estimates of $8.7 billion.

Dell said that it sees quarterly shipments rising more than 40 percent from a year ago. It also said it plans to
''aggressively manage its cost structure.''

The company's shares were down at $23 in pre-open trade from $25-5/8 at their Friday close.
