But you will see that there is a very interesting statement from Samsung, could it be the reason of the strength of Rambus today, I doubt but it is still nice to see. See sentence in Bold Monday, January 22 11:07 AM SGT Samsung Electronics Set to Profit From Rambus Drams SEOUL, Jan 22 Asia Pulse - With PC games booming, Samsung Electronics, a producer of Rambus Dynamic Random Access Memory (Rambus DRAM), could see profits snowball, an industry source said Monday. Samsung is considering raising its manufacturing plan of third-generation Rambus DRAMs to between 120 million and 180 million from 60 million units originally planned, according to the source. Samsung is betting more computer-related products will need Rambus DRAMs such as the Pentium IV that Intel is actively marketing, PlayStation II (PS II) made by Sony and Xbox, a Microsoft-produced PC game . Rambus is an essential component of Pentium IV, and Sony is likely to contact Samsung about its plan to make 25 million PS IIs equipped each with two Rambus DRAMs this year. Rambus DRAM is a high value-added product with one chip is selling at about US$18. Samsung has only one main rival on the Rambus market, Toshiba which supplies most of its Rambus DRAMs to Sony. However, it is not all clear skies in the forecast. The PC market has been depressed since late last year with questions lingering about how many Pentium IVs will be sold. In addition, some engineers say Pentium IV could switch over to PC133 (synchronous dynamic random access memory) use starting in November, so Samsung's long-term gains through Rambus are questionable. "Though Samsung has a firm foothold in the Rambus market, the outlook for Pentium IV consumption is uncertain, and Rambus' prices could drop in the future," one analyst said (Yonhap) (END) Keep it cool guys :-) Orion
