To: JohnG who wrote (6371 ) 1/22/2001 1:01:04 PM From: Maurice Winn Respond to of 197253 Message 15222414 JohnG, welcomes are specifically 'moderated' in this stream. To welcome somebody, you do it by private mail. I am going to take over from Ramsey Su here because he has clearly flown off the rails in an emotional response to Art's artful post. Brent Scowcroft is as on-topic as you can get! He is on the board, has been for years and is a good buddy of George Bush senior and Condoleezza Rice. He is the most on-topic topic you can get. He gave Condoleezza her original big break! She is the one to send the nukes into China, or, hopefully, get George Junior to keep his Texan 6 shooter in its holster and save the swagger for the home crowd hillbillies who kill doves in the 10s of millions each year in what must be the world's biggest gun-firing ceremony. Colin Powell is already making nice-nice about China. Phew! Ramsey, your post was correct for Samin's, which was a simple political post in response to Art's well thought out post. So, I require two things here. One is for people to stop the one liner political stuff, welcomes, thanks and other stuff specifically excluded from this stream. This stream is our drinking water and we do NOT want it polluted. To add insult to injury, I just want to add that Alan Green$pan is great. The Great Green$pan [GG]. Ramsey is confused about that too. Not only has he saved the world several times, we are going to get a huge stockmarket rise this year to boot. On W-CDMA and cdma2000. Notice how cdma2000 seems to be gaining ground in Korea? Notice how W-CDMA is much more of a political than actual technology, which will cost at least 5% more than cdma2000 due to royalties charged by the GSM Gang [GG] who are all wanting their stupid bit of technology included. It isn't even synchronized for goodness sake. Imagine an asynchronous [or unsynchronized] phone system. There must be huge voice delay in that ... Notice how GPRS is 'just around the corner' and doesn't really offer fast Internet access despite the promise; it is also a political product. Notice how W-CDMA is going to be a LOT harder to do than narrowband CDMA. Fatband CDMA with high data rates with data and voice to be delivered in a timely manner will be very difficult. QUALCOMM is likely to be the only one which can do it [or if others can do it, their solutions will be very bad compared with Q!; same is in narrowband CDMA]. Notice how Nokia is grotesquely dependent on the continued success of GSM and the success of W-CDMA. I would NOT buy their shares if you gave them to me. If suckers do instal GSM switching in fatband spectrum preparatory to installing W-CDMA, then the good news is that QUALCOMM will be able to rescue them with cdma2000 overlays. QUALCOMM did some overlays using narrowband CDMA in Newbury for Vodafone a few years ago and that was successful. The GSM switching is only about quarter of the overall cost of a basestation's electronic gizzards, so when the W-CDMA fails to perform as expected, or even if it is simply too expensive because of the GG, [despite QUALCOMM managing to make it work okay with their amazing ASIC division in SpinCo], it won't be too difficult to overlay the GSM switching gear with cdma2000 and save the day. Mqurice PS: Just in case Ramsey takes me seriously about taking over here, I hereby resign from the Stream Cleaner position. It's a thankless task, leaving one prone to mindless abuse, death threats, curses and incantations. But I DID think Art's post was fair comment and we should play nicely. Samin's and JohnG's posts were unsuitable. This post is excellent.
