DoCoMo to Offer International Roaming Cell Phone Service

TOKYO, Jan 22, 2001 -- (Reuters) Japan's leading mobile phone operator NTT DoCoMo Inc said on Monday it will start offering international roaming services for its Japan users in Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania starting next Monday.

DoCoMo will also roll out new handsets on the same day that will be compatible with both the global system for mobile communications (GSM) standard and also the personal digital cellular system (PDC) standard used only in Japan.

The moves come as part of DoCoMo's efforts to extend its global reach in the face of increasing competition.

The new handset will weigh about 110 grams (four ounces) and cost 211,100 yen ($1,804), DoCoMo said.

Asked about the high price, a DoCoMo spokeswoman said it reflected the cost of technology used in the phone. She said it was not targeted at any particular group of users.

After paying a 3,000 yen registration fee, users will have two phone numbers for domestic and international use.

Would-be users will also have the option to rent the phone for a monthly fee of 6,600 yen.

DoCoMo said the new services will cover about 110 countries and regions, similar to the area in which its Hong Kong partner Hutchison Whampoa Ltd and its roaming partners are currently offering mobile phone services.
