Bush is pouring salt on fresh, open wounds. His appointment of Ashcroft and Norton and his restrictions on funding for foreign groups which counsel on abortion are viewed as alarming and threatening by women, minorities and environmentalists. Watch what he does, not what he says.

OPPOSE ASHCROFT

uspolitics.about.com

First Batch of Petitions Delivered!
On Tuesday, People For the American
Way delivered to U.S. Senators the first
130,000 petitions collected on this website.

As our nation's chief lawyer
and principal enforcer of
federal civil rights laws and
other federal laws, the
position of Attorney
General must be filled by
somebody beyond
reproach: a person of
integrity and good
judgment. John Ashcroft is
a right-wing conservative
with an exceptionally poor
civil rights record and an
astonishingly bad history
concerning reproductive
rights.
He has voted against affirmative action and
anti-discrimination laws, against a crucial AIDS
provision, against environmental protections, and
has received extraordinarily high ratings and
accolades from prominent ultra-conservative
groups and institutions like the Christian
Coalition and Bob Jones University. Moreover,
Mr. Ashcroft's actions regarding the Ronnie
White nomination demonstrate a clear lack of
integrity.

People For the American Way, the NAACP, NARAL, LCCR, the Sierra Club,
Planned Parenthood, the National Council of Jewish Women and other groups
oppose the nomination of former Senator John Ashcroft to the position of
Attorney General.

Review our fact sheets and reports highlighting Ashcroft's extreme record.
Then add your voice by signing the following petition, which will be delivered to your Senator. If you indicate that you would like to receive updates on the
confirmation process, we will let you know the number of signatures collected
wen they are delivered.

Dear U.S. Senators,

The Attorney General is the nation's chief enforcer of civil
rights and other laws. John Ashcroft's record as Missouri's
Attorney General, Governor and Senator demonstrates that
he is not the right person for that job.

I strongly oppose the confirmation of John Ashcroft to be
U.S. Attorney General and I feel confident that you will reach
the same conclusion after reviewing his record.

And those Priests who harass women because they have had abortions

Would do better to examine their own lives.

Look at how many have been accused of homosexuality and admitted to homosexuality.

Look at the number of Priests who have molested children.

Yet, they try and make women feel badly about abortions.

Women and men must wake up to the fact that the Priests in the Catholic
Church are hypocrites.

The Abortion Rights Lobby: Why Is John Ashcroft Public Enemy No.1?

Tuesday, January 23, 2001

Faced with a handful of pro-life Cabinet nominees, pro-choice activists had to choose a target. What was behind their decision to go after Ashcroft?

BY JESSICA REAVES
Excerpt from Time Magazine

When George W. Bush first announced his Cabinet nominees, a great outcry arose from America's abortion
rights lobby. But despite the presence of two resolutely pro-life candidates
(John Ashcroft and Tommy Thompson)
on the presidential roster, pro-choice groups have chosen to concentrate
their efforts almost exclusively on defeating Ashcroft.

All eyes on Ashcroft

For the past several weeks, every pro-choice group in the country,
including NOW and NARAL, has joined forces in hopes of defeating
Ashcroft's nomination for the post of U.S. attorney general — where
he would be responsible for enforcing abortion laws and protecting abortion clinics.
Nobody, on the other hand, seems particularly concerned with Thompson's nomination,
although as head of HHS, he would exercise significant control over health care
policy — and the dissemination of
often controversial health-related information.

Tommy Tompson is as dangerous as John Ashcroft

Yet, he slipped by and was confirmed.

We must not forget Tommy Tompson and what he is likely to do.
