Dan - No, I never heard of Slavomir Rawicz, until you brought his book ("The Long Walk") to my attention.

But of course, you piqued my curiosity, so I did some googling. I turned up two facts that may shed some light on the question of just how genuine the story is.

One is that the book was first published in 1956. Another is that Rawicz did not write it until he was visited by a journalist by name of Ronald Downing, who was interested in yetis, and sought Rawicz out because he (Downing) had been told that Rawicz claimed to have seen some yetis.

Since Downing is listed as a co-author, I suspect this may be an "as told to" book. That may possibly account for some of the more sensationalistic, less credible sections...
