Fortunately, electric power can be transported long distances, though at a cost (in losses). So the plants needn't be located near the (possibly unstable) locations where most of the power is consumed.

Nuclear energy isn't perfect, but it produces no greenhouse gases, and requires no currency draining imports of oil or gas. If we built a lot of nuclear power plants, some of the first fuel that would be used could be extracted from the warheads that were taken off of all those cold war missiles and are currently sitting around like the proverbial idle hands...
