Dell Introduces Its Next-Generation Storage Area Network

New Midrange Storage System With Enterprise-Class Features at a Fraction of Competitors' Price

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 2001--Dell (Nasdaq:DELL - news), a world leader in infrastructure computing, today announced new storage systems and software that comprise its fourth-generation storage area network (SAN) offering, designed to provide critical data protection and storage management features at a much lower price than many traditional storage vendors.
Dell's next-generation SAN integrates a powerful, new Fibre Channel array with enhanced software for managing storage resources. By linking multiple storage arrays, customers can now integrate up to 20 servers and manage up to 70 terabytes of storage on one SAN. Combined with Dell's industry-leading service and support, the Dell SAN provides a comprehensive solution to meet the needs of organizations deploying business-critical applications requiring large amounts of data storage.
IDC estimates that the disk array portion of the SAN market will grow to more than $19.8 billion in annual sales by 2004.(a) Dell achieved 73 percent growth in year-over-year sales of external storage products in the third quarter of this year and reported overall storage sales approaching $1 billion annually.
``With the introduction of our next-generation PowerVault(tm) SAN, Dell offers customers competitive price-performance with best-in-class, scalable and highly available storage,'' said Russ Holt, vice president and general manager of Dell's Storage Systems Group.
``Dell continues to drive high-end computing features into its mid-range, industry-standard storage systems, which deliver tremendous value to our customers. This new rack dense architecture is the ideal choice for businesses running critical applications that require high availability, scalability and reliability.''
To simplify and standardize PowerVault SAN implementations, Dell will offer the SAN hardware, software, service and support in optimized bundled configurations with prices starting at less than $45,000 for an entry-level, high availability SAN(b). These PowerVault bundles can greatly ease administration and reduce operational complexity for customers ranging from small business to enterprise environments.
Dell PowerVault(tm) 660F(tm)
At the center of this next-generation SAN is the Dell PowerVault 660F, a new rack-optimized storage array based on Fibre Channel technology for fast data transfer and advanced data protection features. The PowerVault 660F offers SAN customers Fibre Channel storage priced at 4.5 cents per megabyte which is less than half the price-per-megabyte of many major competitors.
With over seven terabytes of storage capacity in one standard rack, the PowerVault 660F offers one of the most rack dense options in the industry. The PowerVault 660F also offers improved application performance across networks, uninterrupted access to data, fast backup with advanced disaster protection, and data management capabilities.
The innovative design of the PowerVault 660F, composed of 14 Fibre Channel disk drives in its own rack-optimized, single 3U (1U=1.75 inches) enclosure, offers configuration flexibility, allowing customers to scale their storage systems easily to accommodate future growth.
Combined with Dell's PowerVault 530F SAN appliance released last September, customers can start small and grow their SAN with additional, enterprise-class data protection features as their business needs change. These features include storage virtualization for more efficient allocation and management of storage assets, remote and three-way mirroring, and the ability to boot from the SAN for easy replacement of failed servers.
New Dell SAN Software
Dell has incorporated powerful storage management software designed to improve management and availability of SAN resources:

* Array Manager and Storage Consolidation -- Dell's Open Manage Array Manager simplifies storage subsystem set-up and management by integrating RAID configuration and volume management features into a single application. Dell's OpenManage Storage Consolidation software allows external storage subsystems to be safely shared by multiple Microsoft Windows NT® and Windows® 2000 servers.
* PowerSuites -- The Dell(tm) SAN offers data protection through Dell PowerSuites, a powerful software tool packaged into functional suites to target the needs of SAN administrators. Dell PowerSuites provide backup, restore and data recovery features in Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Novell NetWare® environments.
* Windows Clustering -- The PowerVault SAN supports multiple clusters that can share a single PowerVault 660F, providing overall system availability, performance and capacity.

Support
Dell Technology Consulting offers services that include planning, consulting, implementation and performance optimization, as well as training programs designed to get customers up-and-running quickly with their Dell PowerVault systems.
Dell also offers on site service(c), BusinessCare(tm) four-hour response upgrades(d), next-business-day response, a 30-day ``Getting Started'' help line, and DirectLine(tm) network operating system support upgrades. Dell provides customers a single point of contact and access to a worldwide force of trained engineers, technicians, analysts and consultants. For standard hardware support, PowerVault SANs ship with a three-year limited warranty(e). This includes one-year labor and three years parts replacement.

BTW, Douglas, if your intent on changing the name of the thread was to see a hockey stick ramp in the number of postings, I think you were successful.
