X,

I think the first issue is the one of majority. Get a majority and your battle will be won. It is in the very way that our great country was designed. It is when the minority wants to evoke change beyond the desire of the majority that we have issue. Right now there is not one chance in 10,000 of getting a majority to normalize homosexuality. Why? Because, even with constant promotion by the media, the vast majority does not agree with the basic premise; homosexuality is normal.

I do not believe people should be marginalized. What the homosexuals have to understand (and if they want to win their battle they will eventually do this), is that they need to fight, not to normalize their lifestyle, but rather to validate it as an acceptable alternative. A huge difference. What the gays don't understand is that to many people the "normal" word is not to be challenged. What the gays should fight for is what every minority should fight for, and that is fair and nondiscriminatory treatment. Nothing more and nothing less. Its a high road argument and one that could be won.

Put yourself in a hetero's shoes for a second. Take me for example. I could never, ever, be attracted to a man. It just can't happen. Tom Cruise is a really good looking guy, and I like to watch his movies, but I would never want to touch any part of him. Enlightened people know that this is how it must be for the homosexual. They could have the same response to the opposite sex that heteros have to the same sex. Bi-sexuals just like the better odds (joking of course).

Now that you understand how strong this feeling is with the majority, then understand a goal of normal is just not possible. It is not possible because the best we do in defining normal is to say that it is the preference of the majority. With that said definition, it is then entirely possible to state that neurotic behavior is in fact "normal" in America -vbg-

You must see my point.

Just like with some hopeless drug addicts (I am one in regards to cigarettes), there is a choice and then there is not a choice. The same thing does apply with homosexuality. I do not think that all homosexuals just elected to become homosexual one day. Rather something about their makeup, or environment growing up, pulled them in that direction. I was not born a smoker, but with my first one I recognized that I was a smoker. It was known to me before then, and then it was. Not a positive thing in the case of smoking, but still a revelation. Revelations cannot be denied.

As for the conservative religious Republicans, all I can say is that they are not the entire party. They are only a part. I do not agree with all of their views, but I do respect the core that forms the foundation of their arguments (at least for the most part, and for all but the way right, which I consider unstable and not practical). What these people really want is to not be imposed on. The one exception is abortion, which is an entirely different issue, and one that I have never shared my views with anyone here at SI.

BTW, I think Abortion is the single best, and most valid, reason to be a Democrat. That is another discussion, best addressed on a different day. Keep in mind, I am not saying I support abortion, I am saying that it is a real issue that the Democrats have made into an effective cornerstone position. If there was no debate on abortion then the Democratic party would be in ruins. Not enough majority based core issues to rally office winning support. Again another discussion.

Homosexuals could win the war if they picked the right battle. All the things you want for homosexuals are fair and acceptable things to desire. I would argue they are in fact rights. Its how you go about getting them, and if you want to make someone yell "uncle" that causes the problems.
