fishweed

First of all, thanks for following the thread header suggestion on posting os, browser, etc. This should help us try to find the solution to your problem.

Now the bad news...I'm clueless. I searched for info about your problem but came up empty. Were you using ie4 when these problems started. Have you tried netscape or another browser to see if the problem was browser specific? You might try (if someone else can't help) upgrading your browser to ie 5 or 5.5.

fishweed ....

overload on the video card is your problem ....
or a least that is what I've had explained to me ...

have had the identical problem several times in the past on several different boxes,
and
after spending more than I care to recall on various and sundry "repair methods" from multiple local sales/repair shops ... NONE for which the solution was satisfactory to me .. it seemed to "fix it" as far as the techies who were charging me for it but I was still unhappy ....

here is what I did .....

went to multiple monitors
upped the RAM to 256MB

and have had NO problems in several years now ....

Now, I have no idea that the explanation of vid card mem overload is a valid definition or not,
but,
I do know that my solution has worked for me
AND
for two of my trading buddies who were having the exact difficulty ...

we all upped the RAM and went to multiple monitors
and none of us has had this "scrambled multiple image" bug visit us since ....

hope this helps

Nemer

ps ...
I have only one box running this morning instead of my regular three
but
I currently have open ....
8 Explorer windows
1 Outlook Express window
1 trading screen *(non browser based Java)
1 steaming data screen *(browser based but not included in the Explorer window count)

hi fishweed,

thanks for providing all the good background info for us. it's appreciated.

"it seems to "smudge" it and create further multiple images"

i know exactly what you are talking about, and it's tough to describe, though you've done well. i have had browser windows open partially inside other browser windows, giving a 3-D appearance where it looks like the windows are linked together and through each other, usually in one corner. it looks pretty cool, but it's very annoying. i've also seen the graphics smear or smudge together as you've described.

this does not happen to me now that i am using win2000. perhaps there's a reason in that? here are some other things for you to try that may help....

1. hardware acceleration. follow this clickstream: start\settings\control panel\system\performance tab\graphics button. move the slider one notch to the left and run system for awhile. if no improvement, move it another notch to left, then three if need be.

2. device manager. look in dm for conflicts in the form of yellow exclamation marks in front of components.

3. corrupt software. i have had software installs that have caused this smudgy condition. the obvious remedy is to remove the program and either reinstall or discard altogether. since you've been experiencing it a long time, this may be difficult to pinpoint. but you noted that you reformatted the hd and reloaded everything, so that kind of indicates that maybe you put the problem right back on your system. use your intuition here.

4. new driver. check for latest video card driver from manufacturer. however, as an interesting aside that i will share here, i mentioned at the top that i have not experienced this smudgy prob with win2k. well, that's not entirely correct..... i ran into it when i went to the 3dfx site and downloaded and installed their recommended voodoo3000 driver! man, everything looked psychedelic! i diligently tried to reinstall the same driver and got the same crappy results, so i switched back to generic windows driver and lived happily ever after.

5. reseat vid card. nothing to lose here, by pulling card out and pushing it back in. could also try another slot. while you're in the case, reseat the memory stick(s) also. this alone might cure things. (positive thinker here.)

6. system tools. if you haven't tried this already, follow this clickstream: start\programs\accessories\system tools\system info\on upper toolbar click 'tools'. from the drop down menu, try running a number of these tools, starting with 'system file checker'. proceed with other tools such as 'directx diagnostic', 'registry checker' and 'version conflict'. make note of 'system configuration utility' (scu) for next suggestion.

7. remove programs from start up. using scu, select the startup tab and study the items that are running on your system. uncheck items you don't want or need. we can provide more skinny on this for you if you are unclear on what is what in this scu area. keep in mind that this tool is a wonderful way to remove nearly all progs from startup, then systematically reinsert them into the mix. it is a time-consuming process, but you can often pinpoint a problem program using this 'reintroduction' method.

8. update browser. ie4.0 is like the little browser on the prairie. <g> i would go with ie5.5.

9. system maintenance. whether you use a utility suite like norton systemworks, or just their standalone component, norton utilities, or a set of tools by another vendor, imo there is much to be gained by utilizing their 'find and fix' capabilities and their disk maintenance features.

all things considered, i believe that you have a mem problem, a resource problem. but i also think that since so many things have to work well in conjunction, that it may very well require an assortment of steps to put you back where you want to be.

i hope this helps, and i encourage further questions from you for the thread. good luck!

:)
