my rec to r&r the cd-rom drive still stands. in fact, more than before. reason i say more is because when you said you system didn't even recognize the drive, that puzzled me. when mine went south, i could see it in explorer, it had a drive letter, etc. but i was getting e:\is not accessible errors. i searched the web and at one point i discovered a help forum literally filled with folks who had the same prob. and though a suggestion or two was made to clean the lens, the overriding call i was getting was to replace the drive, as they are rubbish (quoting here) and never last more than 3 years. while that may be an exaggeration, i tend to feel it falls closer to the truth than not. and like i said, a delta 50x cd-rom drive from staples for $20 after a $20 rebate just fixed me right up.
