My guess, just a guess, based on not following that line of discussion closely, is that some inflammatory provocation was going on on one side and some inflammatory misinterpretation was going on on the other.

So it was Poet and not X who you think backpedaled?

It's not much of a backpedal to say, "Good point, I should add 'about,'" is it? I mean, isn't that what you would hope she meant?

Where did anyone say they thought the techniques of masturbation should be taught in school? Was that X or Poet?

I wouldn't be surprised if someone said it would be a good thing for girls to know, but would be surprised if someone said they wanted teachers in the public school to be teaching young girls how to masturbate well. Did somebody really say that? What a dreadful idea. Show me the post so I can disagree with it!

I have to depart SI for a while.....

Hi Bill,

Regarding the sex ed topic:

Poet and friends seem to be a little fuzzy on that "taught" vs. "taught about" issue. The backpedal position is "taught
about". However, she has made several posts on the need for girls to learn the proper technique of masturbation as it
comes "naturally" to boys. That would imply "taught" to most casual observers.

I did indeed say that masturbation should be taught in schools and gave GZ my reasons why around midday here yesterday. A few minutes later, kholt posted to me that she thought it would be more clear if I distunguished between "taught" and "taught about". I responded that she had made a good point, that what I had meant to say was that masturbation should be taught about. I don't think this is backpedalling, merely an attempt to make myself clear.

And FWIW, I think we all know by now that there's no "proper techniques" with regard to masturbation. Even we proper Yanks don't crook our pinkies. <gg>

Show me that post too.
I have trouble believing that anyone really thought Poet or anyone else was suggesting a curriculum addition such as Remedial Masturbation Techniques. <g>
