$1.6 trillion over a time frame when the total GDP will be $70 to $100 trillion doesn't make for a very big tax cut. The only reason you have such a big number is that it is total projected cost over 10 years.

Then again, it could be that either reason makes sense. Running big surpluses is crazy. That money belongs to the people. But now that the economy is slowing, it also makes sense to prime the pump with some tax relief. JLA

I guess Richard Nixon was right after all. "We are all Keynesians now."

OPPOSE ASCROFT

Evidently, the Senate has delayed the hearings. On Impeach George thread we noted last week
that Washington Post picked up discrepancies in Ashcroft's testimony. Evidently, the Senate
noticed.

First Batch of Petitions Delivered!
On Tuesday, People For the American
Way delivered to U.S. Senators the first
130,000 petitions collected on this website.

As our nation's chief lawyer
and principal enforcer of
federal civil rights laws and
other federal laws, the
position of Attorney
General must be filled by
somebody beyond
reproach: a person of
integrity and good
judgment. John Ashcroft is
a right-wing conservative
with an exceptionally poor
civil rights record and an
astonishingly bad history
concerning reproductive
rights.
He has voted against affirmative action and
anti-discrimination laws, against a crucial AIDS
provision, against environmental protections, and
has received extraordinarily high ratings and
accolades from prominent ultra-conservative
groups and institutions like the Christian
Coalition and Bob Jones University. Moreover,
Mr. Ashcroft's actions regarding the Ronnie
White nomination demonstrate a clear lack of
integrity.

People For the American Way, the NAACP, NARAL, LCCR, the Sierra Club,
Planned Parenthood, the National Council of Jewish Women and other groups
oppose the nomination of former Senator John Ashcroft to the position of
Attorney General.

Review our fact sheets and reports highlighting Ashcroft's extreme record.
Then add your voice by signing the following petition, which will be delivered to your Senator
. If you indicate that you would like to receive updates on the
confirmation process, we will let you know the number of signatures collected
wen they are delivered.

Dear U.S. Senators,

The Attorney General is the nation's chief enforcer of civil
rights and other laws. John Ashcroft's record as Missouri's
Attorney General, Governor and Senator demonstrates that
he is not the right person for that job.

I strongly oppose the confirmation of John Ashcroft to be
U.S. Attorney General and I feel confident that you will reach
the same conclusion after reviewing his record.

The Democrats have demonstrated fiscal responsibility. They have also supported free trade.
Also, Mr. Clinton, unlike past presidents such as Bush and Reagan, never pressured Mr.
Greenspan into raising or lowering interest rates.

My neighbors have prospered over the last eight years and so have many others.

By contrast, Bush wants to build up the military and has proposed the huge tax cut that you mentioned.

The cold war is over but Bush also proposes spending millions if not billions on a military shield against missiles.

How will other nations view the huge build-up in the military? How will they react to a military shield.

We don't need missiles. We need peace, free trade and fiscal responsibility.!
