Re: Meanwhile, sources added, Intel will slash the price of the 1GHz Pentium III chip from $465 to $268, a 43 percent reduction....
Intel's mobile Celeron chips will see price drops of 30 percent or more, as well, with the 700MHz mobile Celeron falling from $181 to $123. Meanwhile, the 650MHz mobile Celeron will be reduced from $134 to $96 and the 600MHz from $96 to $75.

news.cnet.com

93% to 96% of Intel's CPUs sold this quarter will be PIIIs or Celerons. Those are listed "Quantity 1000" prices, which are discounted to OEMs and distributors. Those prices also don't reflect terms or coop advertising (which is deducted from their invoices by Intel's customers). Intel's $200 ASPs would appear to be a thing of the past. The non X86 architecture group lost $2.5 Billion last year.

The dogs of war have been unleashed.

This is not good news for either AMD or Intel, but it may be good news for Compaq, Gateway, etc. If prices get low enough, the deals become too good to resist, even for the more jaded consumers.
