<<You sound cold. Are you at that dark, long endless part of winter?>>

I'm about 1/2 way between you and Croc. Even though the days are cold they are longer. It's 5:05 and the sun's just setting. Beats the hell out of being dark at 4:30.

It was 35 yesterday and today and only dropped to 25 last night. Last night being the important part. It's been dropping to 10 so it takes forever for the drive to warm up. Today I got 4 hours of enough sun to loosen the ice. Work the shovel under it and pop a 2'x2'x3" section loose. Even with a cold got a lot done. The cold. Woke up with it, wife had it earlier, at 1am. Started sucking the zinc lozenges. They really work. I'm feeling fine. Wife's cold only lasted 4 days.

So it wasn't the fact that I was unobtrusive as I crawled along; it was that they were really on my side and just clearing the way!

Correct!!! You were being escorted to safety.

You sound cold. Are you at that dark, long endless part of winter?

Yes.... we have had several weeks of weather in the 0 F. range... and despite the lengthening of the days, they are still quite short... and the snow is deep this year. I don't think we will see an early spring. In this region, the snow is usually just about melted away by April 1st, so we have a long ways to go yet... *sigh*.... I think I shall return to my tarpaulin to snooze for another 60 days or so...

they were really on my side and just clearing the way!

A customer at my bank didn't have such good fortune last night. While transacting business with a teller this morning, one of her fingers began to bleed. She made a big to-do about it and said a small squirrel had gotten into her house and bit her as she was trying to remove it. Another bank employee rushed away and returned with a band-aid. The woman reassured the teller's concerns about rabies by saying that she had a doctor's appointment later in the morning. I wondered how a squirrel could still be small in the dead of winter.

Then it was on to the grocery store where a rare friendly checker, a man about my age, was on duty. There was no one behind me in line, so I had a chance to visit with him for a minute. He said he has a lot of "repeat business", including several customers who come thru his line every day. I told him my mother has always been that way, going to the store every day. I'm almost as bad -- have never been a planner who buys a week's worth of groceries at one time.
