Bill,

AMSC does have for sale SMES (Magnetic Energy Storage). This is the product the utitilities were shy about dishing out cash this year due to capital contrains. That is not what I was referring to. I was referring to HTS motors. The technology is not quite ready:

"Last quarter, the company also announced that it had received a follow-on contract from the U.S. Navy to continue the design of a 33,500-horsepower HTS ship propulsion motor and to fabricate and test key components of the motor. The company stated that it expected to receive additional contracts from the Navy that would lead to sea trials of a sub-scale prototype motor in 2003, and ultimately the deployment of full-scale HTS motors on naval vessels.

The company selected ALSTOM Power Conversion in December as a subcontractor on its new Navy contract. ALSTOM, a market leader in motors, generators and ship propulsion systems, will be responsible for the design of the stator and drive systems and for propulsion system integration.

The company also announced a collaboration with Litton Ship Systems to apply HTS technology to both commercial and naval ships. Litton Ship Systems is one of the nations leading ship builders. "
