iso, just had sort of a short version of this conversation with my dad; he rolled a pickup decades ago and went from being every waitresses beau to being one of the chosen: a child of jesus. we have an agreement that our communications, we live several states from one another, do not include messages from him about jesus. i told him, in one of our rare forays into that realm, the other noc that my only problem with his beliefs is their exclusivity. i asked him, 'well, what about all the buddhists in the world? are they doomed to hell?' 'not at all,' he replied 'as long as they accept jesus as their savior.' i have to admit i laughed, and he did see the humor in his remark. i think ashcrofts comment on jesus being the only king is problematic in that it implies he wants everyone to believe as he does, and damns them, literally, if they don't. this self-righteousness is a bit much for most people. i spent my entire career in nursing in a county hospital in a largely black community, oakland, and jesse jackson's activities are pretty much par for the course in that community - i know, i'll get a lot of flack for that statement, but it is my experience that this is true. i have always had a problem with the ease with which my black friends will father, or mother, children by different parents. after a while you just have to give up judging in that context. my point is that jesse jackson is not insisting everyone be just like him. ashcroft is. to me that is the real heart of the matter. don
