It is always possible to make money in small cap semi equips through superior timing. But your chances of picking a disaster like KMAG are much greater than with the large caps. Of the members of the sector with market cap over two billion dollars, only one has underperformed the S&P 500 over the past five years. Data for IPEC is not available, but for the other stocks you listed, all but one have underperformed.
