The joint technology will allow users to connect wirelessly and securely to corporate e-mail accounts as well as SFA and CRM software.

Certicom Corp. (Nasdaq: CERT) has announced it will partner with Symbian to develop Symbian-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) systems for next-generation mobile phones.

According to Certicom, the deal is aimed at developing Symbian-based smartphones and communicators that have secure access to corporate intranets.

The agreement calls for Certicom to become a Symbian Technology Partner. The companies plan to jointly market and develop technologies that will be used in Symbian-based devices worldwide. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Speeding Security

Certicom said the partnership will speed its support of the Symbian wireless platform on its handheld VPN client. The result, according to the companies, is that Symbian users will have secure access to corporate data via the Certicom handheld VPN client, which will provide secure remote access to corporate intranets through a number of popular VPN gateways and firewalls.

This new system will let users connect wirelessly and securely to corporate e-mail, sales force automation (SFA), customer relationship management (CRM) and other productivity software already available for Symbian-based devices.

Symbian vice president of business relationships Jeremy Copp said the next generation of mobile phones will likely be "one of the most influential networked devices to drive customers into the post-PC era," and the advances will create "a vast new market for wireless networked services and applications."

"In the enterprise sector, businesses will adopt WIDs [Wireless Information Devices] only if they allow both employees and customers to obtain remote access to information in ways that conform with corporate security policies," Copp added.

Still in Beta

Certicom said its handheld VPN client is in beta on multiple platforms and is the first client to operate interchangeably with a wide range of VPN systems. The VPN client is designed to be interoperable with products from companies such as Alcatel, AXENT Technologies Inc., Check Point, Cisco, Intel, Nortel Networks and Radguard.

According to Certicom, Symbian's Technology Partner program will give it the opportunity to work closely with Symbian to develop its VPN client. Symbian also can help Certicom deal directly with Symbian's licensees, speeding up time-to-market for a wide range of WIDs.

Certicom, based in Hayward, California, offers security technology for wireless devices.

Symbian, which is owned by Ericsson, Matsushita, Motorola, Nokia and Psion, develops and licenses a software platform for next-generation mobile phones. <<
