The snobbery works both ways (Europe><America). The Europeans keep thinking American artists are so much cooler than we do (think Jerry Lewis) and in America Europeans are automatically taken more seriously than home grown talent.

Here, The Philadelphia Orchestra (of Fantasia fame, etc.) recently completed a search for a new conductor, specifically saying they were looking for a new vision to attract a larger audience and get a recording contract, etc. So they hired another old European white guy, who is probably perfectly capable but is exactly what we've had for all this time.

I wrote them a letter when the search was announced and suggested they consider Bobby McFerrin, of "Don't Worry, Be Happy" fame, who has been working as a classical music conductor for the last decade. (Musical director in Minneapolis? I think.) This suggestion was totally ignored as well as any other suggestion put forth of anyone who did not fit the traditional mold.

And by the way, in my experience the best engineers are as imaginative as the best in any field. A friend of mine once observed there are a lot more engineers interested in Shakespeare than artists interested in calculus.
