if memory serves me correctly, the Porsche 911 engine was originally designed by a VW engineer (??)

In 1935 the VW Beetle was designed by Ferdinand Porsche at the request of Adolf Hitler.
In 1948 the first Porsche car built had a 1086cc 30kW VW engine.
In 1963 The 911 (901) appeared. As far as I know this is not a VW engine. But it was a flat-6 air cooled engine. This is similar to VW technology (coming from the same designer after all)
In 1969 The (cheap) 914 had it's debut. THIS one had a VW designed engine.
