NetCache™ C6100 from Network Appliance Breaks Streaming Media Performance Barrier

NetCache C6100 Offers Industry's Most Scalable Streaming Media Solution

Sunnyvale, CA - January 22, 2001 -- Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), the leading provider of network-attached data access and content delivery solutions, today announced that NetApp streaming media test results from eTesting Labs show the NetCache C6100 is able to serve up to 27,000 streams of video from a single appliance without a loss in frame rate or packet loss. This makes the NetCache C6100 one of the industry's most scalable and cost effective media solutions available.

Network Appliance commissioned eTesting Labs to test the streaming video capabilities of Microsoft Windows Media Technologies on the NetCache C6100. The tests were aimed at measuring the NetCache C6100's maximum load capabilities, as well as demonstrating the ability to scale heavy loads without any degradation in end-user performance.

"Cost-effective and scalable edge delivery infrastructure is crucial for the fast-growing streaming media market," said Jonathan Usher, group product manager of the Digital Media Division at Microsoft Corp. "These test results show what can be achieved when innovations such as the NetCache C6100 use Windows Media to achieve high-throughput and the best possible audio and video quality."

eTesting Labs used Windows Media Load Simulator to generate incrementally greater loads to a Network Appliance NetCache C6100. Windows Media Load Simulator is a network-based load simulation and test tool that allows users to emulate multiple users of Windows Media Player on a single network client.

For stream splitting tests, the NetCache C6100 was configured to take a single unicast stream from the Windows Media server and 'split' it into multiple streams, one for each client connection. For video-on-demand testing, the NetCache C6100 was prepopulated with multiple files of unique content from the Windows Media server, storing the data to the C6100's disk array for client access.

The NetCache C6100 was able to service 27,000 22 kilobyte unicast streams, 9,000 100 kilobyte unicast streams, and 3,500 - 250K unicast streams while still providing the frame rate of the stream as it was recorded. The NetCache C6100 was also able to sustain 985.2 Mbps of unicast traffic over two Gigabit Ethernet connections to the network of 120 Windows Media Load Simulator clients. In addition, eTesting Labs found that the NetCache C6100 was able to sustain a maximum of 751.5 Mbps of video-on-demand traffic over two Gigabit Ethernet connections.
