As far as cutting down the last tree, at least in the US, the old trees get replaced with new trees. Trees and wood are a renewable resource. I would be more concerned about suburbia or farm land expanding and reducing the total forest acreage, than about cutting old growth forrest and replacing it with new trees.

Why do you think that the Sierra Club among many are proponents for saving as many of the old growth forests as possible?

Just as an aside: how long ago was the Valdez spill? Forget about the effected environment, its all screwed up? The Alaskan community that was most effected still has not come back economically.....and no one can predict when it will.
