Chrysler says it sees weak demand in near future for telematics
Reuters Company News - January 24, 2001 18:38

DETROIT, Jan 24 (Reuters) - The Chrysler unit of DaimlerChrysler AG has no plans to rush into selling in-car computer services, despite extensive efforts from several other automakers.

Chrysler officials said Wednesday they will wait until technology advances further and a set of industry standards for such services, known as telematics, are established before attempting to install them on a wide range of Chrysler vehicles.

"Market share is not yet driven by those electronic services," said Karenann Terrell, Chrysler's director of Business Connect for its E-Connect Platform.

Telematics services currently include a range of computer and wireless communications built into vehicles -- everything from unlocking doors through a phone call to dialing automatically for help when air bags deploy.

Telematics are seen as a rich vein of future revenue by several automakers worldwide. UBS Warburg LLC analyst Saul Rubin has estimated that the market for telematics hardware and services will grow from $4.2 billion this year to $47.2 billion by 2010.

General Motors Corp. has installed its OnStar service on about one million vehicles, and has made deals to offer the service in vehicles built by Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. Ford Motor Co. has set up a joint venture with Qualcomm Inc. called Wingcast to sell telematics in Ford vehicles.

In luxury cars, basic telematics have become fairly common; DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz unit will offer a telematics package as standard equipment on all 2001 models.

But Terrell said telematics are not yet in demand among Chrysler's middle-class buyers, and that the company couldn't make money with an OnStar-type approach.

Chrysler instead would rely on computer makers for such services, and showed off a prototype of telematics network built into a Chrysler PT Cruiser. Through screens built into the dash and the rear seats, each passenger would be able to download audio files, send and receive e-mail and even play a trivia game based on the car's location.

Terrell said the system, based on Sun Microsystems Inc. components, is a glimpse of what could be offered in two to five years. She declined to say when Chrysler would step into the telematics business, but the company has said it would have some limited service on a 2002 model.

This might be a more official announcement about 1x

There is quite a difference between the announcement of 1X going into limited service in some select areas of Korea and the reports from the market place regarding the sucess/failure of that service. Or, to put it another way, I have not seen any reports about 1X handsets flying off korean store shelves.

As Limtex repeatedly pointed out, the reports about market acceptance of 1X were non-existent. (Yes, there were PR's about the commencement of service and the rehashed media reports of the same.)

"Wireless operators already launched trial IS-95C services in some parts of Seoul in October last year, while promising to roll out full-fledged services by the end of 2000.

However, the schedule was not met for lack of handsets compliant of the mode and slower-than-expected deployment of networks."

Since Q makes the chips that go into the 1X handsets, shipping those chips in commercial quantities (the now shipped 5105) means that desirable 1X handsets will become widely available. Now all that is needed is content which requires the faster data rates.
