I think it appropriate to change one's manner in front of business
associates, aquaintances, strangers who will as such, and the like. To
change one's manner in your morning greetings with someone you have
thoughts of getting to know better is ultimately deceptive, unless you
the way you present yourself is a way that you like to become.

The thread was talking about role playing the other day. I recall that Rambi and I each said that we lacked the role-playing gene. It may be related to the speech-adjustment gene because I don't have that one either.

As my language coarsened over the years, I never developed the ability to turn it on and off and found myself raising a few eyebrows. Finally, I gave up and went cold turkey on the language. It took about a week to break the habit and maybe a month to remove the last vestiges. I recall pondering how some others seem to be able to adjust their speech to their audiences. I'm still not sure if I more admire that ability or if I'm more wary of it.
