Thanks for your detailed explanations...very helpful.

On a somewhat related topic...I heard last week on CNBC that if you are short a stock the goes bankrupt( the example they were using was GlobalStar) your "profits" may not be taxable since the position was never covered....another one for a tax atty to answer.
