Banks in AU don't have the FDIC program like the US. There was talk of Insurance on deposits, but some speculate that if the banks went, so would the Insurers.

I only mention this, as some believe the FDIC influences risk taking behavoir. Perhaps the Aussie banks are a bit more conservative. US Banks out number AU banks by a significant margin- perhaps the FDIC allows smaller banks to garner more deposits.
