HELSINKI, Jan 25 (Reuters) - German Siemens (SIE.XET) overtook U.S. Motorola (MOT) and French Alcatel (CGE.PAR) in terms of mobile phone market share in the third quarter to become Western Europe's second largest player, research firm Gartner Dataquest said on Thursday.

The German group's share of the West European cellphone market rose to 16.7 percent in the third quarter of 2000 from 12.1 percent in the second quarter, leapfrogging Motorola and Alcatel.

Industry leader Nokia's (NOK1V.HEL) market share also surged in the third quarter, climbing to 31.3 percent from 26.7 percent, while Alcatel's Q3 share eased to 11.3 percent from 12.4 percent in the previous quarter, Gartner Dataquest said.

Motorola saw its share of the West European market sliced to 9.9 percent from 13.2 percent, while Swedish Ericsson -- due to report 2000 earnings on Friday -- saw its Q3 market share trimmed to 10.4 percent from 11.2 percent.
