In Manhattan, a lot of the standard restaurants are worthwhile. The Stage deli is a gas: it is not unusual to see a fairly visible actor, like Nick Turturro (recently of NYPD Blue), and the food is great. They overdo everything, to keep the tips up, so a sandwich is likely to be a choker. Still, the best cheesecake around.

The Russian Tea Room is kitschy and elegant at the same time, a sort of emigre fantasia of the end of the Russian Empire. I have not been disappointed in the food, although it is very pricey.

Tavern on the Green is a great deal of fun, with its crystal dining room and extravagant topiary. The food, over the years, has generally been worth it, too, although the last time I was there it seemed under par.

There is a row of bistros on West 51st Street, near 7th avenue. I particularly like La Bouchon, which is small, laid back, and has a very good pre- fixe menu.

I will try to remember some other lesser known spots later.....
