My grandmother would call that "trash", because the behavior is trashy

[Edit: my thesaurus pulled up "hobnail, yokel, bog-trotter, bumpkin; plowman, plowboy; rustic" )]

Bumpkin is derogatory and condescending but carries a lot of the same information as hick. Redneck originally meant the people that worked the fields (sharecroppers) so much that their necks were perpetually burned by the sun, hence "red-necks". These were the poor people of the South.

I'd also heard that the term referred to the necessary scraping of dirt that left their neck red in order to become presentable at Saturday night barn dances. My grandmother used the term "white trash" to refer to the dark side of country people. I guess those would be the people who started the fights at the barn-dances!! <VBG>

I agree "country" is entirely positive (JMO). However, I think that it doesn't include all sets of behavior that can be reasonably be expected and is a little Pollyanna. Jeff Foxworthy reminds me of some of my good friends in the Navy. Very likeable guy with a self-deprecating sense of humor, but a respect for his values which he knows REALLY are basically good.
