Ken,

Poor you.

So you're forced to take a faster dedicated service that isn't dependent upon the number of users on your cable segment; while probably getting a lower price than your cable provider would give you.

My ADSL service (1 Mbps Nortel modem based) costs me less than $20Cdn monthly. Inst'n was nil. NIC which I needed was nil. Modem rental is nil. And it has been extraordinarily reliable compared with my prior ISP which I haven't signed onto in about 2 months.

I don't know about your Cable service provider, but those that use the Canadian big name are frequently complaining about loss of service - either eMail alone or total service outage.

Might be a geographic thing here. But there's no way I'd use the cable service. I'd go back to dial up first - something which I can't imagine doing willingly.

Ian.

Too bad. I see that Ian has ADSL and it went in easily and is cheap. Wish I had the same luck, but didn't. Had to go with cable. But it has been tremendous. I'm getting over 1.2 throughput in peak hours bidirectionally.

I see you are getting Verison DSL. Old GTE I presume. That part of the Verizon DSL network is undergoing some equipment issues right now. GTE uses Fujitsu/Orckit while the rest of Verizon uses ALA DSLAMs. I'd be curious to know whether your DSL line will terminate on ALA or Fujitsu. Please let us know how the install goes.
