and/or we start exhibiting very straight postures).....I know I can't
persuade them and they know they can't persuade me...

I think what you and X are saying is true for avid Dem and Rep partisans because they're in competition. But I don't think it's necessarily true for individual people who come from different places on the ideological spectrum and want to discuss specific issues. There's lots of room for a meeting of the minds, IMO.

Well sure- there are people I disagree with and don't abhor. But there are whole threads on SI full of abhorrences- if you know what I mean. And of course it is all relative. But the internet allows for concentration- and concentrated things can cause intense reactions.
