since the problem arises because the AMT was not linked to inflation, do you suppose that law makers from any party might just decide to do so? Might even do so, using a calculation to bring the present levels up to date.

With the respect you expressed in past post for Alan Greenspan, what do you think of his apparent agreement on tax cuts?

That's precious. ''They're lucky no one found out about this during the campaign,'' says Iowa
Republican Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee." That's a refrain we may be hearing a lot in coming months. In a fight between Chuck Grassley and Phil Gramm, Gramm wins by a TKO, which means that the alternative minimum tax rule stays. That should make GW's rich buddies ( and in a few years his almost rich buddies) real happy.

Dear Tiger Paw: Seems like much todo about nothing. Simple solution will be to index the AMT somehow. I am sure they will find a way to grant tax relief for people. Now, if you do not wish to receive it I hope that you will either write a check back to the treasury as a donation or make a comparable donation to your favorite charity. I personally look forward to some relief. JDN

<<W's tax proposal even sounds dumb to his supporters.>>

Greenspan understands and backs President Bush's tax cut. When Congress passes President Bush's plan they will probably change the AMT.
